You can use a polyurethane on it first and the paint wont eat the foam. However, I found that having the paint eat some of the foam gives it a cool old/weathered look.

I actually bought my carvewright used, and from a guy in Bonita no less. I paid $850 for mine and it had about 60 hours on it. I would think you could still get about $1000 for it, since it's never...

I think you will find that with a clear coat or not, there will be some fading over time. From being under water to being exposed to the lighting above, pretty much everything will fade...
Any 100% acrylic paint is fine. Ive also been told Krylon Fusion is fine as well. I'm in the aquarium biz and have used everything from epoxy to plasti-dip with no problems at all.

As always, very cool Doug! It reminds me of an illustrated art cover from a 20's-30's Amazing Science Fiction pulp. Can't wait to see more.
bergerud,
This is a very cool idea! My only concern would be the amount of air that can move thru the small hose and where to mount the hose, as others have said. I still love the design...
Very cool! Ive wanted to make a replica Rocketship XM for a while. This may just inspire me to buy the STL program.
Nice! I think you may be, even a little more weird than me, and I like that.
Great stuff! As far as I'm concerned, making this kind of stuff is what it's all about. Great sculpt too!
Have you been to see the Harry Potter exhibits at Universal in Orlando yet? It is truly...
42087Update: I still need to attach the hands & finish the chest and feet, but here is the almost done version.

I tried to post on your blog, but I could not. Anyway, you just can't seem to beat the price on these machines out of China.
I can't say I'm impressed with the casting of the Z carriage and spindle...
You might have a dull bit. I cut a lot of acrylic, both cast and extruded and you have to have "like new" blades and router bits. Change the bit and see what happens. Also make sure you only go at...
Please do, I'm interested to see
I've been looking at these machines for some time myself. How much did the shipping/taxes/and other misc. fee's end up costing? Also, was it shipped to the nearest seaport or right to your shop.
liquidguitars,
You sir, have it going on! I can't say I have a Les Paul anymore, but I do have a Gorilla on my work bench right now.41723

If you are not trying to profit, then you are fine. Worst case scenario, they make you remove them, period.

As much as I would like to say I built the helmet with the STL importer or something extreme, that is not the case. The carvewright was used to make all the circle cutout jigs, the collar shape,...
I would not consider myself an expert in that field quite yet, but I do like to try different things.
Doug,
As usual. very cool! I have been interested in trying that styro spray for some time. I want to use it on full scale tombstones. Does it produce a heavy texture?
Jeff
Thanks Michael, I can't wait to see the fur when it comes in. I'm working on the feet now.

I don't remember what they did. I wish that show never ended.
Thanks for the compliments guy's. The original was so bad, I think it was made out of paper mache. As bad as that movie was, the Robot/Gorilla is an icon for vintage sci-fi.
I'm building the body,...
Michael,
The board was 1/2" MDF, maybe that was the problem. Low temps in Florida are rare, even though it's been pretty cold here lately.
Jeff
It had to be the board Ike, I have not had the problem since. However, I am in Florida and it's almost always summertime here.
