"mongo" mallet
I made this today for a gift for a secret santa exchange on another forum - (the giftee is a hand-tool ww'er so I very much doubt he'll see this) - I call it "mongo mallet" and it's definitely a "persuader" and only for the heaviest of tasks like chopping mortises.
I turned it in mesquite from right at the root ball so it is very heavy and has none of mesquite's normal tendencies to spletch/split. The end initials were made on my Carvewright in a piece of quilted maple. I did the initials and cut it out on the CW and then used a 2 inch colt maxicut drill bit to make a cavity for the disk. It fit like a glove... I love the accuracy we can get with our machines!
Thanks for looking,
Lawrence

Awesome work man. So funny, I was just in the colonels office yesterday hanging something up and noticed that our intermediate guys made a Thor hammer for him out of metal. I think I will try to make one out of wood...

Came out great in mesquite! None of that around here, just in the SW. Great idea on the initials!

Thanks all- I was amazed how nicely the disk fit in- it added an extra personalization that I was really looking for.
Now if I can ever get my round jig up and running (lack of effort on my part) maybe I can come up with something similar that is entirely carved and has personalization all over it.
