Covering the CW during operation

Ok, I'm going to lay everything on the table. I have built a rolling cart for my CW, and have just bought a dust collector that I will be picking up on Friday. Now, I use my CW outside, on my back deck, until I have completed my workshop.

Is there anyone who has built some type of sound-deadening cover for their machine, so that it's quieter while in use? Our neighbours aren't complaining - yet - but I'd like to reduce the sound, if at all possible.

Now, I realize that the machine will put out some heat during it's run. I'm not saying I want to wrap the CW in a thick sheet of lead-lined fabric - although the idea has crossed my mind. I could, very easily, build a box around it with up to 12" of clearance, and ports for the input and output of longer stock. If I did this, I would probably put some acoustic foam inside, which I believe would quiet the machine significantly. My concern is the heat buildup. I could put in some holes in the top, or even vent the box, somehow.

I guess I'm just looking for ideas. Thanks for reading!

I do not, good sir. I own a 70+ year old wartime, with two floors and no basement. My CW cart is presently in my Wife's Quilting/Sewing Room, which used to be our dining room.

Seriously though, one more point-- if you are using a quick-change chuck and switch to a rock chuck LOML and I both found the sound to be reduced. I have no clue if the actual db is lower, but the amount of high pitched "squeal" was reduced greatly. (it is still loud though)

As for a box, I've always considered the flat sheets of styrofoam and wondered if they would deaden the sound somewhat. It is light, easy to fold away, and can be attached at edges with duct tape.

I second that..... A QC sounds like a Router.... The Rock reduces the sound to that of a 3/8 inch drill..... AND if you run the cut motor exhaust into a unplugged canister vacuum using the vacuum filter as a filter.... that helps.... Most of the Shrill is from the motor.....

Our Cross Road Trucker, Carve Buddy ChrisAlb did that when he had his shop setup.

Awesome news, as I understand my Rock is currently "in the mail". :) And I do believe that there shall be an adapter made shortly for my cut motor exhaust to direct it into my dust collector. Sweet, thanks! (Add to this that my Wife just informed me that SHE will be working with her nephew on the weekend to clear out one of our back sheds to make room for the CW, while I complete our bathroom reno, and I think I'm in good shape!)

I've done that myself. Felt a little self-conscience about the noise so made some signs and dropped them on door steps.

LOL. That's what actually prompted the conversation. I offered a house sign to my neighbour, and while I had actually completed hers, I was working on a few others. Let's just say my inability to keep all of the MDF dust out of my carves threw a few lines out of alignment, meaning I worked on my signs all day. She said, "I certainly hope my sign wasn't causing all that noise!"
