Extra Long LCD Keypad Ribbon Cables for sale

I have reconfigured my Carvewright for what suits me best, and I wanted to relocate the LCD and keypad. Unfortunately, the stock ribbon cable isn't long enough to give many options. I found 1 meter long cables that allowed me to move the LCD and keypad where I wanted. The downside was, I had to purchase a bundle of these cables.

For those of you adventurous enough to make your machine conform to you rather than the other way around, I have a handful of these cables available. Just let me know if anyone is interested.

For me, the Carvewright was a quick turnkey system for woodworking. Prior to this, my workshop has revolved around modifying conventional milling machines for machining metal to CNC. I think most people out there are using their Carvewright as LHR intended, but since I am accustomed to automating machinery to do things that it was never intended to, I do not have much hesitation doing so with the Carvewright. Anyone out there that has or at least given some thought into hacking their Carvewright, I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences to get the most from this tool. Honestly, I am fairly certain that my shop will have a LinuxCNC controlled Franken-Carvewright at some point. Especially if every new "upgrade" LHR releases to be able to use the machine as much as they allow costs as much as it does, switching to the completely FREE non-proprietary software the rest of my shop runs on seems more and more like a no brainer.

Being a electronic guy my first thought with the additional length of the data cable for the keypad is possible EMI causing problems. Even spikes of static taking out the communication chips in the controller. With that being said... Interesting concept.... Looking forward to hearing more.

Sure you can run a new controller to each axis and use the encoders so this is possible... Then you have the Board Sensor functions.

And please try to do this without "Kicking the Dog" of LHR's proprietary software upgrade policy. I say that in a nice way... I know I will look forward to seeing your progress. I am a glass half full kind of guy... "Look what I was able to do with my Linux" Is much more impressive than...... "Kicking the dog, I did this because of the LHR upgrade policy"

Sorry but I just have to comment, Did any one notice that Apple gave their newest update Maverick away for free? Also Microsoft gave away windows 8.1 for free. All over the internet geek news magazines are saying this is going to be the new norm. I think LHR was late to the starting gate and now may have to backtrack in the future. Not kicking the dog, I love my CW Machines but just commenting that I don't like the new LHR upgrade policy.

Yes, the comparison is more than ridiculous! Besides, you could not PAY me to load Win 8 or 8.1 on any of my computers.

Sorry for "kicking the dog". My interest in converting a CW at some point to LinuxCNC is to add functionality and my original and continuing interest in the CW is for a lightweight belt fed CNC with a small footprint. Although mine does not look so much like a CW anymore, I don't intend to mechanically change it too much from original. Designer and the upgrades are a great value for someone with no CNC experience to accomplish what would otherwise be impossible. For me, I don't have much value for entry level user friendly software and want to see functionality on par with what I am used to from robust opensource software. I would not advise the average CW user to break from LHR software. However, I am sure that there are others out there that would rather work with G code than Designer and don't want to deal with continually paying for new features in proprietary software that is below skill level.

As far as CNC conversion for the CW, I see two basic options. 1) Build custom mounts to replace the servos with nema 23 stepper motors. I haven't measured it out and am too lazy to walk to the shop now, but it would probably be a tight fit. Possibly nema 17's would work for the Y or Z axis. 2) Get the pin outs for the servo motors and ratings (maybe LHR would volunteer the info?)

Either way, all CW electronics go, but inexpensive 3 axis driver boards with parallel port connectors for servos or steppers are readily available and inexpensive. Without switching everything back, Designer would no longer be an option. In other words, if you aren't familiar with actual CNC software or do not have the time to learn, best not to try.

As far as any sensors, LinuxCNC is very configurable for inputs. The stock encoders for closed loop op should not be a problem. As far as the board sensor, let's pretend for a second that it is not usable without the other CW electronics. Could zero in a board with any type of edge or center finder, a touch probe, alignment marks in the machine, a roller micro switch with NO or NC contacts on how you decide to set it up, or depending on the exactness required, just eyeball it. The X axis encoder could also be used for a reference. Infrared is another option with more than one way to apply.

At some point I might find a CW for sale with fried electronics for what I am willing to pay and actually do this build. I will do what I can to provide assistance if anyone has a fried CW and wants to give it a shot. Also, if anyone has the initiative to check into the servo pin outs, I would be happy to figure out how to connect it to LinuxCNC. This should really move to a new thread, but it would be cool to have one with conceptually how to do it even if nobody does this build yet.

I only brought it up because LHR reps on this forum used microsoft and apple as comparisons when they first announced 2.0. They said paying for upgrades was the industry standard which was the case when 2.0 came out but looks like now the industry standard may be changing. It was not called ridiculous when LHR said it.

I think you have yourself confused on this one. Industry standard for cnc applications (tool pathing software, designing/modeling, etc.) is totally different software that your are comparing to windows operating systems.

Your consistent moaning about 2.0 is getting a little old. If you do not want to buy it then do not. I do not care.

The thumbs down feature was removed so when you click on thumbs up it shows the thumbs down icon. Clicking on the thumbs down icon removes your previous thumbs up. It can be confusing.

I have made two posts about 2.0 that were not responding to others so you must have me confused with one of the others also complaining or perhaps you are thinking we are all one? When I do post on the forum I am not just speaking to fwharris and others may care. I am through with this thread on this subject.

According to the quote you responded to, LHR related their software to proprietary operating systems and the poster was only repeating it. Also, according to the poster, the statement made by LHR at the time they made it was accurate and it is only more recently that LHR's policies toward upgrades has become less like those of the industry that they have chosen to compare themselves to.

My response to the poster was not only in this thread but to any discussions about 2.0 and his comments made in those discussions. My apology to you and others for doing so.

My point on the comparison of software packages, cnc systems to basic computer systems, was that they are only similar in that they work on computers. They have total different functions and trying to compare how a company chooses to price their software with these comparisons, IMO, is a weak comparison.

We have taken your original discussion off topic and my apology for that as well..

To get back to original idea, would one not have to put a honking big stepper motor on the x belts? How else would you get the accurate positioning and torque required?

Stepper motors would be an option, but not as clean as just using the original servo motors. The table on my CNC'd mill uses pretty stout nema 23 steppers without gear reduction to drive a heavy slab of cast iron. A machinist's vice outweighs anything a CW would ever see. The original motors I had on the mill were a lot more tame. They worked, but didn't deliver the feed I have now. I think a honking big stepper would wreak havoc on the CW's plastic reduction gear train. Also, the CW uses a lot of gear reduction to accommodate weaker motors and it gives more precision to the movement.

After taking some rough measurements, a nema 23 should fit almost like the X axis motor pocket was intended for it. A Nema 17 would perhaps be more appropriate. The biggest issue I see to driving the X axis is finding the options for getting the correct gear pitch for the motor shaft.

One other upgrade that I would like to consider for an upgrade is the spindle motor. I upgraded the spindle on my mill many years ago to increase my RPM limit from 2k to 12k for micro endmills and I can machine metal at those speeds without significant noise levels. The same approach wouldn't work on the CW, but knocking down the sound would make me happier and more importantly, make my wife happier. I have seen some guys use for homebuilt CNC routers watercooled spindle motors with VFD's and they seem to deliver the power and speeds while producing much less noise. The VFD could be controlled by LinuxCNC as well.

There are a few reasons that I have for entertaining the thought of a LinuxCNC CW. I have quit buying LHR's tooling for my machine. I also have been using tooling sizes and styles that the CW software does not support. This requires that I have to figure out how to trick the CW to let me use the appropriate tooling for the job. I also do not have any way to set appropriate spindle speeds or feed rates for these tasks. My complaint about the proprietary software is that it limits my ability to do stuff like this. At the same time, I understand and respect that the limitations of the software protect users without a machinist background and attempt to deliver the best experience to those of all skill levels.

Now back to the ribbon cables for a second before I have to run. I have had several inquiries and I have just a few cables. My asking price is $15 to cover my original cost to purchase and shipping to me and also to cover shipping to whoever buys any. I prefer PayPal so PM me for availability and email address to send an invoice to and I will try to send them out Saturday. For anyone that does not get one that is interested, they are 24 pin 2.0mm ribbon cables that I purchased on Ebay, but the seller only provided packs of 5.

I meant to directly drive the belts. I thought you would not want anything to do with the backlash of those little plastic gears. That would mean writing code to deal with the two encoder feedback system like LHR has done. I thought a direct drive stepper was the simple solution.

Could compensate for backlash in the CNC software which to me is much simpler than writing code. I have no intention to develop my own software when there is well established opensource software for the task. To your point about eliminating the drive gears, that really doesn't sound like a bad idea. That would nix the idea of using a nema 17 stepper, but I think you could get a strong enough nema 23 in the x axis motor slot.

With the X Drive, my thoughts are that the reduction gears are the best solution to drive that weight and the double check system that LHR has developed checking for lost motion with 2 encoders, the one on the X motor and the Brass Roller is excellent. Sure I am a LHR Chearleader... without the uniform...

So the Y and Z Axis would be a easy conversion but the X would give the most challanges in my opinion. At first in 2007 I had thought the X Servo Motor was driven by 115 VAC due to the weight and I saw the Q1 Transistor on the X Termination Board and the 115 VAC. It was only later I found out that the Q1 was the on off switch for the cut motor... I was Impressed that the little X Motor could do so much work with the reduction gears and was the same size as the Y and Z... Impressive....

In my opinion Servo's like LHR is using are better than Steppers without feedback. I don't have much real world hands on with steppers, it's all been mostly Servos... Sony used a few steppers for light weight tasks like applying a sticker to a picture tube. From my first Navy Analog Gun Fire Control Computer in 1977 to Servo Controlled Fanuc Robots and Factory Automation at the Sony Picture Tube Plant in San Diego in 1995. Servos are Continious and steppers are like the like the name... steps... Both accomplish the end task but Servos are like a clock that is always on time... and a stepper is like a stopped clock.. only accurate twice a day.... The Stepper is always lagging... In MY opinion....

Steppers that loose counts because the electrical push is not powerful enough to push through a problem like I had seen on the Shop Bot Forum years ago when the rails got Tweeked. But when you add a Encoder feedback to a stepper then you have continious feedback of did the stepper accomplish it's mission.... Encoders come in 2 flavors. The Absolute where it ues a Binary Disk and is zeroed once and never forgets it's home position. And... I can's think of the name... but the one that LHR uses bumps into the left side of the machine for Y and the top mechanical stop for the Z. It then counts pulses from that BUMP and knows where it is.... That is why it goes through the procedure of establishing home on startup. And if you loose power the machine will need to re home before starting over.. With the more expensive Absolute encoders for example at Sony if a power fluctuation knocks the whole plant off line you would find dozens of glass picture tubes in mid cycle stopped... They made 17 and 19 inch Computer Monitor Picture Tubes and 20, 27, and 32 inch TV Tubes in a 24 hour a day plant when I started in 95. All gone now... With the Absolute Encoders guys like me restarting the equipment were less likely to get hurt with dropped and imploding glass...

If we can take the Sarcasum of Open Source / LHR out of this it would be an enjoyable thread for the electronic guy in me...

This is the most fun in Alternate CW Fun since I heard of the machine that used 4 Air Cylinders to lower the head onto the board eliminating the 2 Jacking Screws. This let FULL LENGTH Cains be carved with a Rotary, 10 inhces at a time.

Picture 5 the little Univac UYK-20 Digital Computer and 3/4 inch magnetic tape drive behind it. State of the Art at the time... A Cell Phone has more computing power than 10 of them now.

So I have a Servo and Electronic background and why I have so much interest in the workings of the CW.

A quick response to the "Sarcasm of Open Source / LHR": For a quick, basic project, a close to stock CW would be the simple solution. For a project with special considerations such as a desire for unsupported tooling, using the CW with G-code interpreter software could offer some benefits. I don't think that one is a good replacement for the other, but rather that each has a different application. To accomplish such a build, there is also some proprietary software such as Mach3 or the upcoming Mach4 that would be worth keeping in mind.

That said, ideally I would like at some point to have both an LHR controlled CW and some form of a CW like CNC router. Actually before buying a new CW I had tried to find a broken CW to convert to CNC, but at the time, the price difference I found between a broken machine and a new CW base model was not that much different. I decided to just buy a brand new one with the intent that if it should ever die, I resurrect it to run conventional software. The change of opinion that I have had since buying a CW is that it would be worthwhile to have one in the shop running its native software, but I still would like a router built around the CW conveyors. Also, using my own liberal interpretation of the saying, "if it ain't broke don't fix it", I would want to attempt this build on a dead CW.

I did purchase a used set of the conveyors with the rubber belt. The question to me is, whenever I do get to this build, do I use a dead CW, or use those conveyors to build a CW clone. One thought that I had was to use the CW to build the frame for a CW clone using a closed loop stepper system. I assume that the CW can handle UHMW well and that would be well suited for the frame. That could potentially allow for adding width to the cutting area of the CW, although I don't currently see a reason to go much further.

One question, has anyone tried the CW memory card in another form of PCMCIA card reader? It would be interesting to see if another reader is able to see the card and files outside of the Designer software. The g-code files that I use now can be opened and manipulated like a text file without special software. It is probably a bit too optimistic, but I am curious if the memory card files once accessed could be viewed and possibly edited the same way.

Having the Conveyor Belt setup my first thought is to use the max width of the conveyor and start with that and build a from scratch CNC... This is getting interesting...

As for the PCMCIA I have not heard of anyone with luck tapping into the secrets of the computer or card. Remember the machine operating system is contained on the card and having different cards with different versions of designer can be done.

The machine is brain dead without a card installed and booted up. Similar to a PLC or Program Logic Controller use in Factory Automation.

The closest thing to gaining knowledge of the DB25 connector attached to the copmuter is the Voice Talker Project. A Experimental Device that LHR supported the maker by adding some software to designer. It let the key strokes and LCD be turned to voice. The Designer needed to move on to another project and left the project to die a slow death of neglect. But He did prove it would work.

My wife has a babylock card reader and many cards the same size. I have always wondered the same thing. Just never tried it.

The card reader is a proprietary device that uses a token embedded or programmed into the card and reader. It is manufactured by Standard system devices. Although I have never tried to put the card into a standard pcmcia slot my guess is it would not work as it would not have the token required to read the card.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread.

Anyway, I recently had a component failure and with LHR apparently out for the holiday I decided to look for other sources of parts. Again, I potentially would like to have a true CW in my shop along with a second CNC router that has some of the unique CW functions and potentially some extent of interchangeable parts. The emphasis being on SECOND CNC router, not converting the original one.

Well I found a "broken" CW that I thought I could potentially borrow parts from and at some point convert to a broader form of CNC. Did not have any history on the machine and I don't think the owner did anything more that try to sell it. Got it in today and decided to give it a test run before borrowing any parts from it. The machine had two issues that I found. The person that I bought it from did not have a card to boot it from; The front compression roller sensor was stuck. Long story short, the machine, which is a model C with 59 hours on the cut motor and 60 hours on the servos, works just fine. I can't see me gutting one of these that works perfectly fine and I don't think that I broke my other one good enough yet. I was not ready to add another full fledged CW to the shop, so not sure that I will be keeping this one since it isn't broken. I guess I shouldn't be disappointed that the darn thing works.

To address the roller switch... sometimes it is just dirty contacts or a loose or broken wire....

But I have also found that a machine that does not have dust collection and a LP Air is used to blow dust around lets if build up on the resting plate of the roller building up layers until it rest too high to let the tang of the switch fall into the slot. So it never changes from compressed.

Good job finding a new used machine....

As for the CW Cards... I don't see much money in it... Meaning that I don't see where you could make any money selling large quantities of open source cards to justify the investment of time and money.... but I could be wrong...

Back in the 80's in the days of the 12 foot Sat TV Dishes and Video Cypher.... It was found that a guy could PAY for every channel offered.... Then make a Copy of the Chip that held the Unit Serial Number and sell Thousands at the Swap Meet.... So change that chip in your home box.. and get all the Channels... That worked until video cypher caught on.... and bought "One Chip" and decoded the Serial Number... and turned THAT service OFF.... Back to the Swap Meet next weekend.... My Neighbor in San Diego worked for Video Cypher in the 80's and told me the story..... The Chip had a battery to maintain the memory until you plugged it in and one slip... it died...

At least there isn't anything to restrict using the card from my old machine for the new(ish) one. The new machine was almost spotless inside...aside from being stuffed full of packing peanuts...and the little plug of saw dust packed into the compression switch. It took longer to pick all of the peanuts out of it than to get it going on its first carve. :)

Was reading this with interest, since one of the big drawbacks to me is the proprietary nature of the machine, and the limitations of the software. I wouldn't mind so much paying the price of the software, if it were closer in ability to it's nearest competitor, or it were usable on another machine.

I am located in the Dayton, Ohio area.

For certain projects, Designer can be a quick easy solution. That's why I want to keep an actual CW in my shop. Then there are times that I want to do something that either isn't part of the LHR software I own or they don't offer it at all. Then I have to try to trick the CW into doing what I want...but if it does something other than it is intended to do, it won't have the logic to do it correctly even if the end result is the same. I have the software to do what I want to do CORRECTLY and then I have these machines that are physically able to do it, but they can't talk to each other. Inevitably, I will need some form of CNC router that can perform the tasks that the CW's software won't allow.

One discussion that had happened here was closed loop vs. open loop. As nice as closed loop is to have and that it is already on the CW, I think LHR's competitors at this level of machine are predominantly using open loop systems successfully.

Now a note on my new "broken" CW. I cleaned a little clump of sawdust from a used and supposedly broken machine and it is running flawless. I will probably double the total use it has had by the end of the week. My other model C, which I bought new from LHR and cost quite a lot more practically needed a complete tear down and overhaul when I pulled it from the box. If the broken down machine was what LHR sent me to begin with I would have so much more respect for their quality. I had it up and running minutes after unpacking it. To say the least, the first one was not like that.
