Software Picture Great to Bad

I’ve done a number of photos that have turned out just fine. The problem is that when I change the bit optimization to high or best for a split second while it’s optimizing the photo looks the best I’ve ever seen it on screen. It then quickly goes back to being distorted, grainy,and/or fuzzy. I would just really like to be able to clearly see the picture on screen to do any final adjustments before running the project, instead of seeing errors after a 2 hour plus run. I do know that there is pattern editor, but really trying to just have a clearer image to see in designer. Thank you for any help in advance.
