Made these for a coworker's Cape Cod house. One for the side of the house facing the street and the other by the front door. Primed, green spray paint and gold paint pen. Sealed the gold paint and hope it holds up to the cape weather. Price of gold has gotten pretty high!

Went looking for your homepage but got a 404 error. Wanted to see more of your work.

Very Nice. The shell was applied? What material and what glue?

I Like IT !!!

Very Nice!!!...http://forum.carvewright.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

Use a marine spar varnish. That's what they put on boats. I use it for all my outdoor projects. Has UV protection too.

Nice Job!!

Really beautiful! It's impressive the quality you've got here. I was expecting there to be all kinds of fancy leafing or something, but a pen! Impressive. I'll be keeping my eye on your projects in the future. Congrats on a piece well done!

Thanks again!
Purchased the shell pattern off of the CarveWright site and applied it with 2 part expoxy. The base is pine off the shelf from Lowes and poplar was used for the shell. The poplar creates finer dust than I like but seems to have less chip out. The down draft table handles the fine dust particles well. Both the pen idea and down draft table were gleaned from this forum!
I've been thinking of trying Sign Board (or something like it) soon.

If you want to try some Signfoam,
Email or call this Site and they'll send you some free samples to try out.
That's how I got started carving it

Hi Ken,

I've always wanted to try signfoam or a similar material (for sculpting mainly), but I haven't ever gotten around to trying it. Also, I am totally ignorant as to what is used to prime and finish the foam.

I see outdoor sculpts made of foam (Disney, Busch Gardens, etc.), and they often have a hard-shell smooth finish. I wonder what they use to achieve that?

If you go to the site I posted, they have a great Q&A list
and all the info on priming and finishing the SignFoam
http://www.signfoam.com/tech.php?mode=finishing

Also if enter your Zip Code they'll give you a list of the nearest local deals to you.
If you've read some of the earlier posts (I'm sure you have) about carving HDF,
you'll be prepared for the fine dust it can generateand how to deal with it. http://forum.carvewright.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Going to check out that site as soon as I finish this post!
As far as that hardened shell over a foam carve. I once saw a BBQ show that showed how they made a 7' mascott to place beside a chuck wagon. They got a huge block of foam and shaped out the figure, but I'm sure you could use spray adhesive to bond a few sheets together to get the right size. They then sprayed truck bed liner over the finished shape before painting. Weather proof, tough as nails and looked really sharp.
