Try some thinned shellac, litely wipe on the high spots and let dry before staining. The areas that have shellac will not take the stain accenting the deeper areas of the carving.

Still the carving looks great as it is also.

I my self would use some paint and stain combo, the carve looks nice. what kind of wood is that?

I think I will make more of this carve and try different ways . The wood I was told is Cypress it is 8"x20"'x1-3/4" a friend gave me 2- 8'peices of it Want to thank you all for the feedback
