How deep do you guys cut per pass, on a cut path?

I've only performed a cutpath on thin 1/4" stock in the past, but tonight I need to do a cutpath on a 1" board. Red oak.

How deep do you guys go per pass?
Can I get away with 1/2"....or should I do 1/4"...or less?

Personally I'd go 1/4" or less if it has to cut through the whole 1" of material. If I have a pattern that where it will cut there is only 1/2" or less left I'd let it cut in 1 pass. To me it's just how much material actually has to be cut away, I err on the side of caution.
