While a project was carving the depth kept changing causing stripes. I found that the carving bit was just loose enough that it was moving up and down within the inset ground into the bit shank. I tightened the bit and ran the piece though again. Because of the accuracy and repeatability of the machine, it came out perfectly. Lesson - check the bit in it's mounting regularly.
