I'm a new carver. Is it possible to carve in rough-cut lumber? I've made a sled. Does the sled sides need to be the same thickness as the rough-cut lumber I'm about to carve?

In most cases carving rough cut lumber is similar to cutting a graph or pattern
into a project with a textured surface. It should look good.
The rail must be the same height of your project board or a fraction of an inch higher.

Make sure the board edges are smooth and parallel or you will have problems.

Any taper of thickness will jam the machine and get a X Stall or broken X Gear.

A Sled with sides slightly higher is your best bet.

Something like the first slab (with rails) in this Photo

I have carved up rough cut cedar from a woodmizer bandsaw successfully but not as a slab but squared on three sides and without the carrier board. As long as the board is not bowed and has consistent thickness, it works. Good luck with your slabs.
