What product to clean the flex shaft sheath

Search didn't help but I remember mention somewhere buried in a thread about what to use to clean the flex shaft sheath. I'm running a gun cleaning rod through the sheath but I'm still leaving a lot of residue. I was wondering if brake cleaner would harm the sheath or the flex shaft itself for that matter. ???
