I would like to use other varieties of back ground wood and/or change the existing board pictures. I would like to have or create some new ones to use in addition to those that are provided.
With this preamble I have some initial questions:
1) Can the Designer software use additional pictures for wood backgrounds?
2) Has this been done by anyone yet and? (I did a search here w/o success)
3) If it is doable, I am thinking of using either Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop, both of which I currently own to adjust pictures that I take with a digital camera of the actual lumber.
Thanks,
Greg Luckett:)

Question;
1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Yes, you need a JPEG image, and place it in this folder - C:\Program Files\CarveWright\woods1 – The image size needs to be 512x512 pixels

Digital camera images work great. The image name needs to be one of the wood names in the drop down window in the CW Board setting window. You need to use one of these wood names. I added a white image in the screen shot image posted. And named it (Pine_White)

WOW folks!! Those were some very fast and timely replies. Thankyou!:D

After looking at Ken's collage an idea occurred to me. Perhaps we could make a library of the jpgs which have been developed? Something we could all add to as we go? Another thought is to sell them sort of like the patterns are done?

In any case, thanks again.
Greg Luckett

PS.
bjbethke, do you mean that an existing file name needs to be reused or just that any of the files, once in the wood1 subdirectory will show up in the drop down menu when using the board settings?

I just name my files using the format already in the folder. For example if I add zebra wood I would name the file zebra_natural.

I tried to add a file with only one name in the past, and it would not load in the drop down window. Looks like it needs the two part name with the under line (_) in between the wood type and the color. Thanks I was just adding a file to the wood types that were in the drop down window.

Yeah, you have to follow CW's naming convention for Designer to recognize the file. If you look at how they have the existing woods named it is pretty easy to follow.

Does the file size matter? As a test, I opened the walnut_natural.jpg in Adobe Photoshop, then used the auto smartfix, which seemed to lighten it. Then did a save as, which changed the file size from 38kb to 62kb, still 512x512 pixels. This brought up the question about the file size.

I will, of course, test it myself unless hearing that it is a problem.
Thanks :)

Of course you can't carve colors on to your projects,
but sometimes it's fun to see what they - could --look like. http://forum.carvewright.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Hi Greg,

About a couple years ago, we posted some solid color backgrounds for free download at CarveBuddy if you would like to use them. They are already named properly for use with Designer. http://www.carvebuddy.com/free_stuff.html

...and...Here's a few wood grain backgrounds I use from time to time. (Already named properly.)
