Okay here I go with another one of those questions that I should be asking on another forum but I only belong to this one so I ask here.
Has anyone ever carved Basswood or is it Bass Wood? Just wondering how it worked out for a project.
Thanks in advance for any responces.

I've carved basswood I got from a craft shop. It carved just fine though it's a tad on the soft side of wood so it may be more fuzzy after carving.

Here's a site I found that might answer a couple of your questions about Machining: Basswood.

Hi everyone

I am new to this carving thing, what is the best wood to carve with?

I have used pine but it doesn't seem to have the quality I would like I also used Oak for the Last Supper wasn't much different.
Any suggestions.
Thanks

Dan pretty much hit it on the head.
The 4 species he noted, are the most popular ordered from me, for carving.
One species often forgotten tho, is Elm. I love carving Elm...mostly grey elm. It has a very subtle feature in its grain that resembles birds feathers, and it's truly one of a kind.

Bloodwood and Purpleheart also make great carvings, but due to their high density, I never carve more than 1/8" to a stroke.
