Here's the first pattern I made that came out 'ok'

Really would like to be able to do portraits. What worked and what didn't?

I'm hoping this one will work, and I'll be putting it in the machine tomorrow.

Thanks, folks, for the nice comments. I hope I can reproduce what I did when I try again on another photo. I used Photoshop and the tips in the August 2008 Tips & Tricks. I should have written done the steps I followed.

Getting an actual picture to carve in wood more involved than putting it on a piece of plastic. Wood is a dense material; when the machine puts all that detail on a dense material it is harder to make out the fine details. That's why when you put it on a piece of plastic and back light it all the details "appear". The easiest way to mask a lot of the details in a picture is to apply a Gaussian blur to the photo. This will keep the image intact but will smooth out those fine details.

I think there was a lot of luck involved with this one.

Excellent job, Rocky! Glad the Tips & Tricks helped.

That's probably the best quality wood portrait I've seen done.
