View Full Version : can you re-use a board with a cut out in it?

Just wondering if I could put more than 1 pattern on a board, have it cut out and still use part of the board for other patterns. I'm still using the 7 inch extra when I carve and thought this might be a way to save some wood. I also thought of laying out 2 or more patterns - carving one then deleting it from the design and carving the other(s) possibly at another time. Anyone ever try it? Did the machine any issue if you did? I'm thinking the hole could mess with the board sensor when measuring.

I do it all the time. As long as there is material for the brass roller and enough length to stay under the rollers your good. In the old days the board detector would see a hole in the board and stop.... Now the board detector will not turn on in length until the roller releases. As for width, a hole will cause problems but masking tape will fix that covering the hole.

You could mak a jig for short boarda with an extra 3 1/2" on each end to save lumber.
