It occurred to me while trying to see what was happening 'under the hood' that there could be a very do-able solution which wouldn't cost much. My stop-gap approach was to use a small LED flashlight.
Some small but bright LEDS across the top of the inside of the machine to illuminate the work area could be worked into the design without much trouble and at very small extra expense. They could easily be connected to the power supply already in the electronics package.
I think a retrofit package could be designed, too.
