When loading a pattern the machine asks for what type carving bit to use. Why does the machine offer a 1/8" carving bit when carvewright doesn't sell one? Is there another company or what not out there that makes this bit?

You should have gotten an 1/16 and 1/8 with the machine. Its a standard bit used mostly for cutting out. It will show you the bits available in your manual.

The 1/8" straight bit is what you are looking for and should have come with the CW. It's also referred to as a 1/8" cutting bit.

Yes your right, the 1/8 is the cutting bit. However the machine asks if you want to use the 1/16 carving or 1/8 carving. Does this mean that if you select the 1/8 you are actually using the 1/8 cutting bit even though the machine clearly states 1/8 carving? And if so, does patterns come out just as good? And is it a faster carving since the bit is technically double the size?

Designer has a option fot the 1/8 ballnose bit..

But you will have to order it from a saw shop.

just select the 1/8 ballnose from the pattern bit option menu and it should speed up the carving.

LG, how is the 1/8" bullnose compared to the 1/16" for detail. I have seen some do lithophanes in the draft setting and they came out great. Also have you cut any lettering with it and how did it come out? If the 1/8 does a great job the speed sure would be nice to reduce the time of a carve.

Check detail and carving times with 1/8 ballnose or 1/4
options.. look at the pattern bit option under prefrences menue.

right now, I am not seeing any major time inprovments subbing out the 1/16 pattern bit for the 1/4 in fact a tad slower..
