Most of your scans are on the forum also I think, number 1 rule of computing, backup all files possible....

Got to believe what newcarver said. I use http://www.freebyte.com/fbbackup/ religiously after losing a hard drive - and three years of work.

I simply burn a dvd or cd depending on the amount of data at least once a month. As computers are as uncontrolable as things come when it comes to crashing, have had it happen enough times it is just part of the scheme of things for me.

Two solutions, just becaused your computer crashed might not mean you lost everything. 1 suggestion is to take it in to a service that might be able to pull this information back up for you. Might be worth it because of all the scans you have done.
Or you will like you said have to rescan them all unless you still have them saved on your flashcard.

He might need the originals or have to rescan newcarver due to the issue of, if he gets them from the forum he would be restricted to doing anything to them in designer just like the rest of us.

I do also burn to dvd every month to save current work.

I have actually put the drive in the freezer for 10 min then try it, has worked on a couple occasions to retrive info, have to work fast though, when they heat back up they cease working again.
Does depend on what version he was using when he scanned, probably newer version though, I still use 1.120

I have 2 exterior hard drives I update often. Keep one away from the shop just in case....

The mother board in my laptop went down once, they could use the old hard drive so I was OK but it was a SCARE..... Learned QUICK.... Backup....

When is your surgery scheduled Jack? I will keep my fingers crossed for you and say a prayer that you recover quickly so you can get right back to carving. The surgery while major is one that is done more and more frequently and the technology is much improved so the recuperation time is less and less. (I am a nurse in my other non wood working life)

A few years ago, my teenage son had a brain aneurysm blow while in school. He was supposed to go on a 14 mile hike in the back woods with his outdoor ed class that day after school. Someone was looking out for him, he never would have stood a chance had he been on that hike. Timing is everything - and if they know in advance, the odds get much much better. My son graduated this year and you'd never know the difference. It's probably changed me more than it has him!

Thoughts are with you
