Blending edges?

I am sure this has probably been covered at some point before but........
I guess I don't understand how an image is "rounded" at the edges to blend back into the wood. I doubt if I have asked this correctly. For lack of a better example say........a ball image that tapers back toward the wood with the high point in the center. I have seen multiple images on this site where it's been done. You forgot to mention using a surface like domes, double domes and double down domes on that region to get that effect.
