I ruined a sandpaper belt yesterday carving a 42" X 10.5" sign. Started with 6' - 1 x 12 but it didn't seem to easily measure the board so I cut it down to about 50" long. It measured the board okay and started to carve. I came back later and the carving was stalled and the belt torn. When I removed the board it was slightly bowed. Not warped, but slightly bowed. Is there a preference to loading the board with the ends bowed up or down? Since I had adjusted the table rollers up, is there a chance I adjusted them too high as the rollers touched the board before lowering the top and locking in the board? Does it make a difference if the board is locked down or not when adjusting the table rollers? (If you haven't guessed, this is the first "long" project I've tried.)

Ordering new belts was very painless and the folks on the phone very polite.
