Horse Plaque

This is one that I did a cut-out and put on top. The problem that I had was getting it glued onto the plaque as it came out all a-round the head and messed up the stain. Had a hard time cleaning it up. Maybe someone can tell how to and what to use to do this?
This is for the barn.

Nice looking sign. To obtain a more uniform stain I think I would have stained and finished the plaque and the horse separately and glued the horse head on as the last step. Perhaps a final coat of clear finish after the glue dried.
