pattern shape help

I have a pattern of a shield my son who is in the SCA Medevil type stuff wants me to cut out for him but I can not figure out how to make it the shape of the shield. It always comes out in a rectangle form. Can anyone help me out. I am very new at this and this is only my 3rd attempt at making anything

When you import your pattern into the designer, then place it on your board, you should be able to select "Outline Pattern" from the menu options (and with your pattern selected). The designer may choose to supply you with many path objects when you do this, simply delete the ones which are not necessary. Once you have the desired outline, you can apply a cutpath to it and the machine will cut it out, leaving small tabs to hold it in place.

You need to remove the back ground for your pattern and use outline to cut it out in a MPC.
