Casting profiles for scanning??

I bought the scan probe during the sale last week primarily to duplicate some scroll work on some furniture that's been in the family for 100 years.

What do you use and how do you do it to reproduce a scroll pattern and create a working sample for the probe? Of course, without damaging the original.

I've considered using modeling clay to create a negative, then filling that with plaster of paris to create the sample. Any other ideas or advice?

I've searched the forum but I must not be hitting on the correct search words.

Excellent question.

You may have some luck doing an internet search (not the forum) for "special effects silicon casting". The movie industry uses products that allow them to make negative molds and positive castings of practically anything. They also have special realease agents that would (I assume) prevent damage to objects they are making a mold from.

They also show a product that is in a "putty form" that you could use for making your molds.

Thanks guys. We're in the middle of a complete renovation of a house we bought back in September. As part of the master bathroom redo, my wife wants a vanity/dressing area to match the bedroom furniture. The furniture is from her great grandmother and as best we can tell was from 1903. Most of the scroll work is applied with some hand carving on the bed. Building the furniture is the easy part for me. If I can create some appliques of the scroll work, I can find some time to relax before the kitchen rebuild starts.
