After a week with no machine (waiting for a new chuck and help adjusting the Z bearings) it is so good to hear it humming away in the garage.
The bit wobble and decline in carving quality took place over a fairly long period of time. I didn't really notice the problems until the machine wouldn't hold a bit any longer.
