Depth Limit to Carve Region

Is there a depth limit to carving a region?
Every time I try to carve a region deeper than 0.5 in, I get axis stalls.

1" is the advertised max depth of cut, at it will actually do a bit more than that. I assume you are using the standard carving bit?

I am using the standard carving bit. Is there a better one to use?

Nope, that should work just fine. Does it give you an error on every project over 1/2" or just one in particular?
