Hello, sometime back a gentleman on here posted colors that could be added to the board preference section of designer incase one wanted to use solid colors instead of the different types of woods listed in designer.Does anyone remember how to do this .I think I can figure it out ,but thought I would ask first.
Thanks,
Ben

There have been a few posts on this subject, including one I made late last year but I could not find any of them. Look in C:\Program Files\CarveWright\woods1 or where ever you installed Designer. You'll find several 512x512 JPG's that are the wood types that come with Designer. You can add about anything you want as long as you make it a JPG format the same size and keep the naming convention the same. TypeOfWood_Finish, as I recall each type of wood must have a TypeOfWood_Natural variety. I think CarveBuddy may have a few varieties he made up on his web site.

Ben, Are these the ones your looking for?

Screen Fatigue and Clutter.
I don’t know about the rest of ya’ll but after a day of CAD, spreadsheets, word and programming the old eyes get pretty burned out.
The default board settings of Pine-Natural with grain I have found will disrupt my design process. Toggling to the solid brown background doesn’t help much.
What I did was based on one of Jeff Birt’s post. I created a few different solid color backgrounds and added them to the board selection menu under the Pine section.
The number 1 was added to the filename so the colors would be at the top of the list.
Download and save to the C:\ Program Files\CarveWright\Woods1 directory (folder)
Sorry, pre windows habit. Open designer, right click to board settings, select Stain/Finish
and bingo under pine you will find the options for your new solid background colors. All of the existing grain patterns will still be available for viewing after design.
Try them, I think you will agree less clutter and a calming color background will improve your creativity and be more relaxing.

I’ve finally found a light Natural Poplar to add to the wood types and colors we use in designer along with a western heart wood cedar.
Both are very close to the actual colors of the carving stock I use.
It helps when trying to visualize what a project might look like after the carving is complete

Here are a few more colors that can be used for backgrounds in Designer
You can name and number them as you like ---Example ( Pine_Bone+Corian.jpg
Down load the Colors and use your graphic program to take a sample of the color you wish
and save it as a .jpg file to be added to your CW Woods1 folder as noted in Posts above.

Okay, I tried putting additional woods and colors in the appropriate folder (as descrived below). At first everthing seemed to be going ok but now, as I added addtional folders some that showed up orginally are now longer there and some that were in one group (say pine) have now magically moved to another group. I am attaching one of the files that I had put it but now I don't see it when I go into designer and look under the board settings. Is there a limit on how many different types of wood you can have or the number of options for one type of wood?

Roger,

You may be right, a limit on the number of colors is possible.
I have 29 wood grain and sold colors on this computer that I have saved and can use.
I have several other Textured Surfaces and colors on my shop computer that I can also use.
I have archived others on my hard drive to call up as I need them.
Some of the textures that I use for back ground or landscapes are slow to load so I input the only when their needed.

For some reason the Bone Corian color is a slow loader.

Thanks Ken. I currently have 37 loaded. I'm going to try and remove some and see what happens.

Well, I moved out enough colors to get down to 29 and things are still not working right. Most everything I have is showing up under the wrong group (when it does show up). Anybody have any other ideas?

I see that you are running two versions of designer. With two versions you would have to put your colors in both versions to be able to see (use) them in both version...Just thought I would point this out cause I too run both versions and have failed to put a color in both folders...and then tried to use the color...took me awhile to figure out why the wood color was not there...lol

So far while doing this I have only been running 1.126. When I first started putting the colors in everything was working fine. The new colors showed up where they were supposed to. It was only later that things went south. I have now removed all the colors/textures that I added in and while some things are back to being correct others are not. For instance, the walnut colors show up in two different areas and one of the new woods I had added in earlier, but now removed, still shows up on the list of woods to chose from and in the little preview screen it shows black (because its not there).

Still hoping somebody out there can help me with this as I'm out of ideas.

If rebooting your puter doesn't do it...when in doubt..I always reboot...lol
Wondering if reinstalling 1.126 would work? You should zip up and save your favorites first..just in case. Just a thought as a way to start over.

Could you please post these wood textures for others to download??
Would be greatly appreciated.

Steve, If you do a search for "Board Colors" you will come up with a lot of info...
Here's a thread that I posted that has some of them in it.

Hey Steve,

Lin is correct many of the colors and wood grains are all ready posted as .jpgs on the forum, if you click on them, you can upload them into CW Designer.
Any color or wood grain you happen to run across online that you like, just do a take a snap shot or screen save of it and save it as a .jpg and upload them.
There are tons of them out there, I just do a Google image search using the words Wood Grain and you'll get 50 pages to look through.
Plus the post and thread Lin mentioned explains how to upload and use your new colors. http://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

I have been coming up with quite a few additions to my board colors. And I just noticed that when I go to Designer and try to pick a new board color, I have no selections for the Oak that originally came with Designer. I have only added two colors and have deleted nothing. Anyone else have this problem? There are several choices to see in oak but I can't see any of them, they are not even listed in the drop down box.
