Hello all

I received the complete bit set - and have a very embarasing question. The bits appear to be coated in plastic (finger protection?). Must I remove it?

Thanks

Yes, remove the plastic AFTER you install the bits in the quick change holder, The bits are very sharp and will cut your fingers.

I speak from experience...and the blood gets on the wood.

If you ever send your bits out for sharpening they will dip it in that hot plastic to protect the bit and your fingers. Be sure to remove it before it measures the bit length, or it could be off.

Thank you everyone. Will remove it - carefully!

PS Interesting - the 2 bits that came with the machine had no such coating...

Hi Danni,

The Bits that come with the machine,
often come with a couple of inches of 1/4" poly tubing on them.
People often discard them with the packing materials,
but it should saved to protect the bits and your fingers.
I keep deferent sized tubing on all my Bits when their not carving.
I've done enough blood sacrifices to my machine.
You can get the tubing at most hardware or pet (aquarium) stores.
Just get in the habit of using it and you'll do ok. http://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

ps. the unprotected carbide bits bounce poorly on a shop floor
