I got a deal on some rough cut Pecan, Cedar and Oak several weeks ago and planed it down to 3/4" last week. The pecan wood is extremely hard wood...light passes on the planer. Took my most of the day to get thru the 105 BF of cedar, pecan and oak that I bought for $1.00 a BF with my little planer.
I would like to know if anyone has tried pecan in the CW and how it came out?

Lin, Here's a site I found a month or so ago.
http://woodworkerssource.net/onlinewoods/
When you open it you do a search on N. American trees,
search Pecan it will send you to Hickory

Hickory
(Carya spp)
Common Names:

Bitter pecan, Hickory, Nogal morado, Nuez encarcelada, Pecan, Pecan hickory,
Sweet pecan

From here you can find just about all there is to know about Pecan Wood.

Or any other wood as a matter of fact.

Thanks for the link Ken...it didn't have anything under the listing for carving or routing but did say that it can dull up some tools. That I already figured out running it thru the planer...lol I got the link in my Faorites now for future reference.
Once I get the downdraft table built I might try a piece of it in the CW and see how it does.
I really lucked out on the buy of this wood. An area scroller had to move outta state and had to get rid of his wood stash...His bad luck and mine and other scrollers in our areas great luck..

Lin,
I'm sure you'll do fine with the pecan,
We've carved some really hard stubborn woods,
and as long as you take it easy
and don't try a carving that hogs out to much stock at a time - you'll be ok. http://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gifhttp://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

I have carved Hickory in mine it came out fine. Hickory is notorious for being hard on bits. A friend (cabinet maker) of mine charges an upcharge to cover his tooling cost. There is no option for hogging out material that I can find, it either vector cuts or pecks at it with the carving bit.

Hi Mike and Lin,
Sorry I phrased it so poorly,
What I was implying was to try a few shallow
carved projects - first to get a feel for the hardness of the wood. http://www.carvewright.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif
