Flex shaft question ???

I just removed my flex shaft intending on lubricating it.
When I pulled the shaft out a long spring came with it.
The spring seems to be as long as the shaft. It is about 1/4"
in diamater (just fits inside the shaft).
Have I broken something or is this normal?

Although I have never taken that "spring" completely out, it tends to come out part-way when I remove the shaft.
Just be careful about getting "dirt" in the housing or on the shaft. Also be carefull about too much lube.

Nothing is broke, mine came out the second time I took it apart for inspection. It will just slip back in. It would appear to be another layer of protection to reduce friction of the flex shaft to the outter jacket.
