How would you setup the software settings to make the carver an engraver with the option to import photos?

I gave it a try but the text was still too big to be useful.

It may be that I'm not understanding your request fully, but I think the answer is you can't.

You must use it as it is, either drawing vector files in Designer, or, if photos are what you are trying to reproduce, import greyscales.
If you specifically want to produce line engravings from photo originals, you have to produce the line versions in other software, then import it as a greyscale/black & white png etc.
There's no clever way to do it within Designer.
