I had to share this with all of you, after a few attempts, I got the effect I wanted.

That was well done, do you have a tip as to keeping the color from bleeding to the lighter wood?

If you don't mind letting out the secret. What application did you create your design in?

I believe Jon Jantz made that in Corel. MJD, check your private message.

You are right, Jantz did it and it is on his Allcw forum. The idea I had for that was to lamenate 2 different pieces of wood that are different colors and since we know the depth of cut we can cut just below the top one to get the effect we are looking for. The letters would have been too detailed to try and paint. I used clear pine on top with walnut underneath. Walnut does a decent job of cutting but pine is horrible. My next experiment is going to be dying the wood, pine should color all the way through if you use an aniline dye and see how that turns out.

If this type of sgn has the lettering and detail fush with the top I stained my signs trying to avoid the top surface then after it dries I lightly sand the top surface. I have a redwood sign I made, I staind the background dark navy then lightly sanded the top to crisp up the detail, I thought a bit of sealer on the top might help the stain bleed in less after I made this one.
