View Full Version : What simple patterns would you like to see?

Any simple patterns that would make your lives complete? :)

I am running out of ideas for speed modeling exercises. Like an obscure screw head, basic shape, railing, basic silhouette,...etc. Something I can make in a 5-10 minute speed modeling exercise.

As an example the top hat in the St. Patrick's day pattern took me about 5 minutes to model.

Another example, this soft face hammer below was also about 5 minutes to model (making it into a picture took much longer but doesn't count against the modeling time).

Oscar, how about some old man tree spirits? At least I hope that’s what there called... thinking about making some bird houses with the faces for the front opening. On the honey due list...

Gary, great idea. I do make the patterns that are available here but would like something new. They are great house warming gifts, friends love them. Thank you Oscar

Gents, you have given me a challenge! :D

I'll have to have a clear idea of what I want to model but I think I can do one in my 10-15 minutes limit for speed modeling. I'll have to strategize on how to optimally go about it.

More to follow. :)

How about a Sasquatch / Bigfoot?

oscarl48
03-05-2020, 05:09 PM
Dale, do you mean like a Sasquatch face or a whole Sasquatch? I don't think I can make a full Sasquatch in the time frame.

Or something different?

Dale

Oscar, A face would work or just a basic outline of the whole body.

Okay. This was not a fast modeling exercise. lol

It was about a 2 hour sculpting session but I am pleased with the model.

This afternoon I'll start a Bigfoot. :)

Oscar you are getting good at this!

Thanks. Feels like I am progressing a little, at least in some areas. Other areas I am still struggling to learn.

Here is what I am calling a 3d sketch of a big foot. Brought in a flat silhouette and then sculpted some geometry on it.

Hope it works for you.

Kinda thinking out loud here. All the wind spirit patterns that I have come across, are all male.

I hadn't realized Vikings played chess. They had some fun carvings. I especially liked the knights.

Tomorrow I am going to try and carve the old man in the tree pattern. I have a 7" x 12" cedar board glued up and drying.

This is a good pattern. This is a decoration for my wife's garden. Had to restart the project so the line across the face at eye level but since its for the garden I am okay with it and not worrying about it.

Board is cedar 7"x12"x1" with pattern carved at normal, .6 depth and 200 height. Carve time about 1:22:00. Wood bark pattern added to look like a Old Man in the Tree. :)

Stained the bark pattern with pecan stain to make it slightly different color than the cedar.

Nice job on the Sasquatch sign! Be careful they may go viral! Remember the "Kilroy was here" event many years ago.

I got a request to see if I could open the mouth on the old man in the tree to convert it into a sparrow bird house.

Here is my attempt. If anyone tries it please let me know if it works or if it needs tweaking.

Awesome and thank you. I am concerned a little on opening both in size and shape. It should be plenty big enough for sparrows (1.5") but it is a little square so not sure if they will be attracted.

Oscar,
Wow, thank you for the help, I will be carving it, but not until I can get this Cleveland weather to warm up enough to get my machine out into the unheated garage. When completed, I will post pics, and thanks again...

Gary, you are welcome. I do have a some minor concerns with my design. Let me know if the opening has to be rounder.

I am not familiar with bird houses but what I quickly read was as long as it was roundish it should work but I've never done one like this before.

I like the idea of using for bird houses, that was my first idea when I saw the pattern. How ever making houses for sparrows is not a good idea as they are an evasive species in this country and are unprotected in most states. Traps are made to help rid areas of these birds. I have feeders I can not use do to sparrows taking over. They take over all the houses we put out. I'm planning to build a trap this spring to help rid my area of these pests. I have a starling trap out now hoping to get rid of a few of those as well as they look for a nesting site.

Oscar,
I don’t think the size will be a problem. Hopefully, I will be able to carve this soon.
Mugsowner,
Im sorry for the problems you have with the different bird species. I do have probably 6-7 houses in our front tree, and yes they are all occupied by sparrows, but my wife and I both enjoy watching their antics during the seasons. I did not realize folks had problems with them. I hope your traps work and your able to rid yourself of them.

I never stated I had a problem with different bird species. I stated that sparrows and now starlings are a problem for this country as they both are evasive. As far as all your houses full of them, I would expect that as they kill all other species that try to live in the area. Look them up they are not good to have around. The northern part of this state does not have many sparrows or starlings for some reason and my houses and feeders up that way are full of many different species of birds that really add to the enjoyment up that way. You may house and feed sparrows, but don't expect any other type birds to enjoy. if you try to make the area more appealing to others types, they will rid the area of them. I feed and enjoy birds. I have a feeder pole design up in the northern woods that is bear proof, squirrel proof, deer proof, and holds over 50 pounds of seed, 16 suet cakes, 4 water stations, and places for a few other treats such as meal worms. I enjoy watching birds, but don't want to invite them in just to have them wiped out. There are evasive species of many type in this country. Just go to a boat landing and see what they are doing to help slow down these problems.

Mugsowner,
I am sorry if I came off wrong with you having problems with different bird species, my bad, it won’t happen... I like our sparrows they are not a problem for me and my wife as individuals. I do not wish to offend anyone here especially bird enthusiasts.

Didn't realize there was such a difference in what was local species. We've had both the sparrow and the starling all my life along with the purple grackle. The starling and grackle are a pain around the feeders guess we're so used to the sparrow we only fight them to keep them out of purple martin houses. Could are 'global warming; be bringing them to your area? Would like to know if you find a way to keep the starlings away.

There are a couple traps that can be built for starlings. Now is the time to use them as they are nesting traps. You can pm me and we can look at this further, I do not want to steal Oscar's post.

Talking about bird houses. I was in the garage playing around trying to figure out something when I saw a bird fly in. Didn't think much of it since they usually fly in catch a bug and fly out. But after a few seconds no flying out. So started looking around. Dang bird made a nest in my motorcycle helmet. I was about to shoo it out when my wife explained to me that no bird was being evicted in this time of hardship and to suck it up.

Who needs bird houses.

I might have had to suggest that I was 'relocating the nest vs evicting the tenant". Good luck

Birds have to build nests to rear their young. Birds construct nests in areas they think are safe. Now you have a fairly smart bird there. The good news is, the young hatch and learn to fly and all will go away shortly after and will give up the helmet.

Oscar,
Finally, my take on the Old Man Spirit birdhouses... the perch is suppose to look like a “smoker’s” pipe. Not real happy with the way I finished them but my better half gave her approval, one more thing off the honeydew list!
Thanks again,
Gary

Gary, I think they came out great and the pipes look really good. Let us know if the birds like them.

My squatter/trespass birds are finally out of my helmet. My wife had a blast seeing all the little fledglings learning to fly in my garage. I of course was kicked out of my shop because I could potentially scare the babies.
