How to apply a pattern to a shape

How do you apply a pattern to a shape? Seems like I've done this before but now it escapes me. I have a flower pattern to apply to a barrel shape. Any advise???

Try merge additive.

Setting the depth and height of each object should give you control of the relief detail.
