Bit Selection Question

I'm hoping someone can help me out and give me some guidance on bit selection. I'm fairly new to the CarveWright world. I recently upgraded to Designer Pro primarily to have the capability of using the 1/32" carving bit to do more intricate carvings. My problem is while designing a project the bit selection icon on the tool bar is shaded which does not allow me to change the bit assignment. What might I be doing wrong or is there something I don't know about that I should? Thanks for any help you can provide!

To change the default pattern carving bit you need to do that under "board preferences". You can get to it from either the edit tab or right click the mouse while being over the project board.

The "bit selection" tool is only active if you have drawn a vector line or shape (square, circle...) and then have it selected.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping to have the capability to assign the bit to the more intricate portions of a design but I guess that's not possible. So it's choose one bit or another for the entire design then? Thanks again!

Correct, the "pattern bit" is for the whole board not specific items on the board.

When I am doing the front of a urn, it is difficult to place a carved out area in a carved area - the overall contour of the front with an inset area with maybe praying hands and roses. I do it in two passes. I design everything and place a 0 depth carved out area over the inset or window. For pass one I hide the inset and the patterns inside the inset and carve with the 1/16" bit. For pass two I unhide that and hide the overall shape pattern and the 0 depth carved out area, the carve that with the 1/32" bit - maybe even at optimal. If you don't remove the board the machine will not even have to do all the measuring before starting pass two.
