Ok so I am working on this plaque which is for a high school mates son, who will be completing a second tour in the desert. I'm struggling a little bit coming up with an idea for the plaque. I'm trying to use Afghanistan shape for the plaque, with the Apache chopper (Thanks BJB), the Army logo and unit name. It just looks not special. Anyone got a better idea? Thanks for any help!

Do the whole design on a square or oval board. That way you could round or router the board edge and give it a professional look.

What would happen if you outlined the shape of Afghanistan, assign the V-bit to the outline? This would make the Afghanistan shape stand out. Then put your design into this area.

Or outline the Afghanistan shape, make it a carve region (.250 by 100), make a carve region (square or oval) around this shape (.250 deep). Then put your design on the Afghanistan region. You can adjust the depth and height. Hope this makes sense. Try it both ways in designer and see which way looks the best to you.

I'm just trying to come up with something different. I made one for his first tour which is similar to what you said (pictured). Maybe I am over-thinking it... something I do a lot lol.

I played with it a little, I made the rect region 3/8", I made the country outline into a another region with a "0" depth and a large draft, merged the helo and army logo back into the country region, just my ideas.
