View Full Version : Location of Pattern Folders

I've been meaning to ask this question for some time. I have patterns scattered over several folders. How that happened, I have no clue. Some are the stock patterns that came with the software, some are ones I bought online, and some are ones I created. Many of them are duplicates of the same patterns. Attached is a captured portion of the screen showing the folder list.
So, I have two questions, well three actually.
1. Why are they scattered all over?
2. What folder should they be in?
3. If I move them all to the correct folder, will past projects lose those patterns since they are expecting to find them in the "original" location?

You have duplicates because at one time you have been in the main CarveWright folder and double clicked on the file "favorites.mpn". You should never double click on files with the .mpn extension. The folder is the operating folder created when you installed designer and contains the favorites file, basic patterns and patterns/collections you have purchased and installed from CarveWright.
File location is...C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright.
When you add/import a pattern into designer it is added to the favorites.mpn file so that it will show up in your pattern list in designer. When you go to this location you will see in your case 3 different favorites files. One should just be labeled favorites and the other 2 will have numbers "favorites123" etc. The ones with the numbers can be moved or deleted. This should remove them from your patterns list.
You should never use this folder to save your patterns or projects to. Use one that you set up in your regular documents folder.
Any pattern in your projects are associated with that project and not your pattern list so no issue with your question #3.

So,if I move all the patterns to C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright am I correct in thinking that will get rid of the multiple folder selections like "favorite", all my patterns will be there, and my previous projects will still be OK?

NO! You do not want to move your patterns to that location. That location is for the CarveWright software (Designer) system only. Patterns are added to the favorites file when you open/import them in Designer so that they will be in your pattern tool list. When you down load a pattern or project, like from the forum, you should save them into a totally new folder in your documents area.
The only way to get rid of the multiple "favorites" is to go to that location with "file explorer" and either delete or move them to another location out side of that folder.
The patterns that are in your projects are totally separate and have nothing to do with your pattern tool list other than that is where you got them to place then into your project.

So, If I move all the patterns in the various "favorites" folder to something like c:\user\Dave's XPS\CarveWright Favorite Patterns, how will Designer know that is where to look for the "favorite folder"? Just to complicate things, I also have other patterns in the "CarveWright" folder. Do I move them too? I really messed things up by not understanding how CW handles patterns. See the attached thumbnail.

Are all of these is your C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright folder?

No, they are scattered throughout several folders. I don't know how I did that.

That is good that they are not in the CarveWright folder. Then all you need to do to get the duplicate favorite files out of designer is to go to the C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright folder and either move them out of it or just delete them so that they will not show up on your pattern tool list.

I you have different patterns in the secondary favorites folders, you should move them into the main favorites folder before you move the secondary ones out of the subdir (or delete them)

I think you and fwharris are giving me much more credit for understanding what to do than I deserve. If you look down this thread, you will see I have three "favorite" folders and two "basic" folders, the latter being what came with designer. All three of the "favorite" folders have exactly the same patterns. Both of the "Basic" folders also have exactly the same patterns. I also have three patterns that are not in any folder. I would like to have only one "basic" folder that contains the patterns that came with designer, and one "Favorite folder that contains the patterns I have accumulated/made which did not come with designer. I'm not sure how or where Designer finds these patterns, nor how it would find them if I consolidate my "favorites" into a new separate "favorite" folder.
It's too bad Designer does not have a setup function that would show the properties (location) of the patterns.
Again, I think I have made a real mess of this.

Step 1: go to C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright and move the favorites.mpn files which have numbers in their names to a different subdir (make a temp dir somewhere far away to put them in.) Also move the Basic.mpn file if it is there.
Now when you go into Designer, only one favorite and one basic collection should be there.

It does sound a bit confusing but I think we can get you through this. On your computer can you find this folder? C:\Users\YOURNAME\CarveWright The YOURNAME will be how you identified yourself when you set up your computer. If so please do a screen shot so we can view what you have.

Well, here's where I found both the Basic and Favorite libraries. Note that there are three Favorite library files, but only one Basic library file.
1. For the Favorite libraries, should I delete the oldest two?
2. Why does Designer show two Basic libraries when a search only found one?
3. Do I move these to some other folders, and if so, how will Designer know where they are.
4. I also have other patterns scattered through my system. How do I get them into the Favorites library?... or what do I do with them.

1. For the Favorite libraries, should I delete the oldest two? Delete the two that have numbers behind them
2. Why does Designer show two Basic libraries when a search only found one? On my computer the Basic library is located in the programs folder for CarveWright, not in this location. So you might have the double do to it being in both locations. I would suggest to maybe move that one out to another location (maybe your desk top) just to see. I believe when you re start Designer it will recreate a new basic.
3. Do I move these to some other folders, and if so, how will Designer know where they are. If you are asking about the duplicates, You can either delete or move them to another location. You only want to have one favorites file in that folder. Designer only uses 2 location folders, one is in the programs folder and the other is the one that has your favorites files. So do not get hung up on Designer finding the ones you do not want.
4. I also have other patterns scattered through my system. How do I get them into the Favorites library?... or what do I do with them After you get the duplicates removed and all looks good, to add new patterns to the favorites file (Pattern list tool) you can either double click on the pattern you want to add and it will open up the import window for adding it or in Designer do "file..open..and go to the location for the pattern, select the one you want and then the import window will open up as above. For second option you might need to select "file type" drop down to PTN.

You pictures had me confused for a second until I figured you did some type of file search. I if right click on the file and select "open file location" it will take you to the folder they are located in.

Thanks for the detailed response. I printed it out, and will try to follow your very explanatory directions. I found the other Basic library in the C:\CarveWright\Data folder. I don't know why the search did not find it.
Finally, where do I find the pattern list tool?
Thanks for all your help and patience with my continuous questions!

Should you not be looking in the C:\users\Dave'sXPS\CarveWright folder??

Your instructions worked great, thanks again. I have yet another follow up question. As you see in the attached thumbnail, there are two patterns with a red background. I made these by scanning an image. When I single click on either one, I see a thumbnail of it in the bottom of that window. When I double click on them to open them in pattern editor, I get an error that I can only open/edit patterns that I have authored... which I did. Also, I cannot find the file anywhere with a search. Any thoughts

That is the pattern tool in designer that opens up your pattern list..

I am glad we were able to walk you through this to get it corrected. I think at one time or another most have been through this.
As for your pattern problem, what version of Designer are you running? When ever you see a pattern highlighted in red that is telling you it is a purchased/licensed pattern. I think there was an issue with 2.0 and not being able to edit previous patterns. I could be wrong on this but I recall some issue with previously made patterns. Have you tried to find the pattern editor file? This is the file when you did a save in the editor and it has an extension of .MPW

The two patterns look like they are made by Carved Sign Factory Patterns. The CSF on the top one was my clue.

I thought about this last night, and you are correct. I was wrong. These two were some I tried but decided not to use. There was one that I scanned, and got it moved per your instructions to my favorites file. How do I get rid of these two? I'll keep looking for them, but haven't been able to find them yet. When I right click on them in the pattern list, I don't get any options, like delete or remove... no options whatsoever.

Look in the subdir where your favorites.mpn is. These two patterns are probably there on their own as .ptn files.
