This is out of a fairly new y drive. I bought it 8 months ago. I have seen them wear pretty thin but never just break in half. I has been used pretty hard though. Still I would have though the nylon gears would have gone before the steel shaft.

Not standing there looking at it, I would be looking at the gear to gear mesh. They may be mounted to tight to each other and causing pressure to the shaft. There should be no pressure at all unless running. A shaft with a side load will fail over time due to the shaft flexing to allow for this pressure. Not sure, but that would be a place to start looking for a cause.

First I have seen of a snapped shaft... I would keep the parts... The old shaft can be pushed out of the plastic gear. I have snapped a few teeth on the Z Gear trying to pull a stuck flex out of it... So a good gear is handy to keep... As the Y normally wears the shaft thin when the two 685ZZ Bearings fail.
