Hello,

The Pirate’s Treasure Chest project is a great gift for swashbucklers of all ages (including adults!).

This attractive chest will safely stow coinage, small collections or any other special “pirate” treasures, and makes a nice item for display on a wall shelf, bookcase or side table.

The project uses just the 1/16" Carving Bit and the 1/8" Cutting Bit. No other bits are required. The finished dimensions are about: 8.875” Wide x 5.5" Deep x 5.25" Tall

Main items you will need:

1) The Project Files (included):

• Treasure_Chest_Lid.mpc
• Treasure_Chest_Sides.mpc

2) Boards with the following dimensions:

Lid: 0.75" x 9" x 24"
Sides: 0.75" x 11" x 24”

NOTE: Do not use boards that are smaller than specified above unless using an appropriate jig. Larger boards are fine.

Cut these parts with your Table Saw:
Lid Base (not an mpc): 0.25" x 5.5" x 8.875"
Box Bottom (not an mpc): 0.5" x 4" x 7.5"

3) Brass clasp and brass hinges
Same Clasp/Hasp available in Several Different Brandnames:
GateHouse.......Model #890277
Ives/Schlage....Model #C9110B3
Stanley...........Model #CD5329

Brainerd 3/4" x 5/8" brass hinges
Available from hobby stores, "big box stores" and www.hardwareworld.com (http://www.hardwareworld.com)
Brainerd Part # 5075XC

4) Sandpaper, wood glue, wood stain and/or paint and clear finish

5) A Dremel-type rotary tool with assorted sanding wheels and bits to sand small details and speed up preparation for finishing.

Apply the finish of your choice. Here’s what I used on the Pirate's Treasure Chest sample made from Select Pine:

• One coat thinned Bulls Eye SealCoat. Sanded again. (50/50 sealer and denatured alcohol)

• Applied Rust-Oleum Golden Mahogany stain

• Two coats of gloss Krylon Clear Acrylic spray

• Painted Brass metallic paint on select areas

• Two coats of Smart Coat Clear Satin (I like the
water-based Smart Coat as it does not dull metallics)

Metallic Paint & Finishing supplies
ordered from www.sculptnouveau.com (http://www.sculptnouveau.com)
• Brass B metallic paint
• Smart Coat Clear Satin

Here are a few similar hinges available via Amazon (they are 3/4" x 5/8"). However, you can use your choice of any small hinge and cut mortises according to the size chosen.

A friend of mine (and POM subscriber) just alerted me there is a dimension listing error in the PDF instructions for the Pirate Box Bottom.

This is the correct dimension >>> Box Bottom (not an mpc): 0.5" x 4" x 7.5"

(The PDF has the box bottom listed as 7" long, which is 0.5" too short)
