How well would a bit like this work with the Carvewright? I know we'd have to tell the software it was some other bit, but as long as we planned for the actual width/depth of this one...it should work, right?

I believe the bit will NOT work with the machine. Too Wide at the cutter head, the machine would not do it's bit checks properly for a start. Next you would need to do a sled with rails as the board rides on the 2 rubber rollers.....

SO since you are making a sled... Take a hand held router with a large base and secure the board needing to be planned within and use the router to make it smooth.

Like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXuh_Q02DP8

Listen to that "Bit Chatter".....

And with a bit THAT BIG 2 1/2 inch wide bit..., I would make a "ANTI-FLY" Device that locks the router to the sled to prevent a knot from causing the Router to LAUNCH itself to the other end of your shop... A anti Kickback device.... Or an Anti DEATH device....

This is a classic case of using the wrong tool for the wrong job... I believe that bit should only be used on a LARGE CNC Machine under software control...

I would limit the hand held router to a max 3/4 inch bit..... But would feel safer with a 1/2 inch....

I agree with Al, the bit cutting surface is to wide for the machine...

Also it has to come in from the side, can't plunge - there is no cutting in the center.
