Hey,

I have a board 6 5/8 x 33. I want to make a triangle 4 x 16 x 3/8 deep center of board using the 3/8 straight bit with the entire 4 x 16 routed out at 3/8 depth. In designer I drew a triangle and used carve region i choose 3/8 bit it and it only does an outline, I click carve region again and it clears the center making it the same depth. but when I run the project it asks for the 1/16 carving bit. how do I remove the center using only the 3/8 bit?80192

A carve region is the same as a pattern type carve and the 3/8" bit is not available for that type of carve. What you are trying is a pocket carve and to clear out an area you will need to set up several lines/vectors for the bit to follow.

Thanks fwharris,

exactly what I was looking to do. Project is running as we speak.

Cool!! We are still waiting and hoping that the CW programmers get the pocket tool for all to use.. way faster to set up.. good luck!!

I think what you are looking for is what's called a "Pocket Cut". In the example attached I used the "Path Offset" tool to make consecutively smaller rectangles slightly smaller than the diameter of the bit (.3"). Then I assigned a 3/8" bit to each of the rectangles to a depth of 3/8". Notice that the first one (your original) uses an "Inset" that is equal to the radius of the bit. This is because the bit will cut on the center of the line and the inset will compensate for it.

You could also use Bergerud"s method of spiraling into the center with one continuous line so the bit doesn't have to raise and lower quite so often but it's a little harder to construct.

Hi Mike,

I made a couple videos on Pocket Cutting, showing a variety of strategies and techniques you may enjoy learning about. Here are the links:

Hey,

Thanks Michael for the videos they are very informative. Steve thanks for the help but could not open your MPC's due to I only have designer 2.
