I am currently using the carved tight set up on my machine, I was wondering if there was a way to use standard router bits in the carvewright machine without having to buy the carvewright decorative bit set. I have looked through the community but was unable to find a clear answer… Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Carvewright sells an adapter sleeve which allows you to use 1/4 inch bits in the carve tight. Any standard 1/2 inch bit will fit without an adapter. Keep in mind you can not change the types of bits listed in the software but it is easy to match the bit types with non carvewright bits. In fact half the bits in carvewrights sets use the adapter. I use a white side 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch adapter that is for sale on amazon. It is a little longer than carvewrights adapter but it works. The only problem with carvewrights adapter is the high shipping cost for a very small part.

is this what you use?

Yes, I have cut them shorter in the past but lately I just use them at the length they come.

I haven't tried them yet, but I've been looking at these

That is a very sharp bit and the shank is 6mm. How are you going to hold it? Those split adapters are poor for carbide even when they fit.

I have used 6mm shanks but I use an ER11M adapter with a 6mm collet.

So do you think the adapter above is a poor choice? or just for the 6mm bits?

I do not use spit adapters so I cannot say. LHR warns against holding carbide bits in spit adapters. The bits can "walk" out. I think you would always have to get the slot in the right place and then you would still have to over tighten the CT. Ok for steel shank bits I guess.

I would try try a 1/4" split adapter with 6mm bits.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Does anyone know of a adapter that LHR suggests for 1/4 bits?

Lee Valley Tools has adapters 1/2" to 6mm that may work for you.

I got some with 4 split 1/2 to 1/4 they work like a charm for me don't have to over tighten them

There are .25" shank bits from the same company, I just shared the wrong one is all. They sell both metric and standard.

I have two of the ER11 adaptors and they are extremely useful.

I have two of the ER11 adaptors and they are extremely useful.

I have more than a few of them and I use them all the time. The only thing I do not use them for is the deep bits. For the deep bits, I use the CW press on (heat on) adapters.

Any users which are interested should search ER11M adapter here on the forum or just buy one at

How does this part work, you just install it into the carvetight chuck, or does that need to be removed?

bergerud

You just install it in the CT. It was designed it to fit in the CT. It is an adapter which allows one to use bits of virtually any diameter up to 1/4" (it comes with 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4" collets but other sizes are available.) After a bit is tightened into it, the bit is used just like a bit with a CT pressed on adapter.

Ok, when he originally asked I thought he was asking about something cheaper than the carvewright decorative bit set. LHR sends a split collet adapter with the bit set. I have both the split collet adapter LHR sells and the whiteside adapters and they both work great on decorative bits. I do not use them on the cutting or carving bits. I did not take a good look at the link he posted but on amazon there is a 1/4 to 1/2 inch adapter that works great.

this is the one I have used for years. Never had a bit slip. I have one on my 90 deg and one on my 60 degree centerline bits.
