I had a small pile of odds and ends of lumber from past projects that I wanted to use up. So something unique: A rifle/katana display stand. The feet are maple, the uprights are cherry and the cross brace is purple heart. Its been a while since I did real wood working and not just utilitarian pieces. The feet are built with 3 boards with the center cut out to create a mortise for the upright's tenon to fit into and then everything is dowel joined with glue. The cross piece is joined to the upright using a wedged loose tenon.
I didn't have enough wood to do the 7 inch rule and I am also gun shy to do cnc cuts (pretty lousy success rate) so I followed a great suggestion and instead cut some pattern jigs with the CW. Transferred the patterns and cut on the band saw. Cleaned up on the router bench using a flush trimming bit to follow the CW cut pattern. Drilled some accent holes using a forstner bit. Started the mortises on the drill press and finished by hand with chisels. The wedge is beefy by design. I wanted something that would stand out. Upright edges routed 45 degrees. 3 coats of spar urethane and I should be able to start using it tomorrow. It will display my .308 AR and a Damascus steel katana I think will look great together.
The purple heart cross brace has the words strength, honor, courage carved in kanji.
I am super pleased with the result. It is almost a piece of art which always makes me happy.
