I created this simple sign for a guy for his man cave, I made one awhile back using this same painting method but added color to subdue the rust effect, this time I got to go full bore with it.

Wow nice finish, iron based paints and patina finish? How did you do that?

Great job on this sign, Robert. The rust effect came out just super. From the picture, you could never tell is wasn't metal. I am sure it was a big hit. I suspect a lot of folks here would be interested in learning more about the method you used....

The finish on this is so easy to do, I use Metal effects paint by Modern Masters. They have an iron paint that contains iron particles, you put a couple coats on, spray on an activator and wait.....an hour later you have what you see in the picture. I put a coat of sealant on it to protect it.. Thats it, really simple stuff.

My wife has been trying so hard to add patina to some of my carvings. The television shows always distress there projects. My dad just whip his projects with a chain. I will have to purchase the materials and blow her mind.

The trick with aging with paint is to try to deconstruct the layers you see in a actual antique object, think of what may have caused the aging on top of the original finish and recreate it. Break down the color layers, etc.... That is how I look at things when I try to recreate aging. If you can train yourself to think like that the process becomes fairly easy.

Thank you for sharing your tricks. Does the activator come with the paint or is it something else?

You have to purchase the activator separately Mike.
