I have an order for what i'm thinking may be a difficult plaque. It's for a veteran I met at the reunion this weekend, who has lost part of his sight, not to mention part of one leg to service. He was a heavy equipment transport (HET) driver. He wants the plaque to have the two different vehicles he drove, old and new with appropriate tanks. I don't know a lot about these trucks so maybe someone out there can help me. Here's what I need:

The old 911 HET with a M60 tank on the trailer
The new HET (designation?) with M1 tank on trailer

Can anyone help me out with information and/or patterns? Thanks in advance.

Would that be the new HET??? If you could as your customer for some pictures maybe it would help also. Patterns are going to be hard to find I'm afraid. I did a search on google and didn't get a lot of results.

Suzanne,

The new HET seems to be the M1070. I've found a creative commons copyrighted 3d version of the vehicle. So that should cover half the patterns. I have not been able to find any M911. The M1070 model is pretty complex so playing with it to see what kind of pattern I can get out of it.

Dehrlich,

What kind of time schedule crunch are you in? I can make the M911 and M60 tank but it would take me about a week or two of afternoons to finish it. I would have to build the 3d models and then make patterns from them.

Oscar

This pattern was built with a 3d model created by drew147 under the creative commons attribution license. Please give him all credit for the art and model.

It is pretty amazing. There are some creative, generous people still in the world.

Suzanne,

I wish I could take some credit but it was all drew147's amazing model. He said it took him 100 hours to build. It shows. I've started working again so not much free time except for weekends and an hour or two after work. I wish I could quit but I have too many hobbies to pay for. :)

Wow thank you so much! Not in a super hurry to get it done but don't have forever either. Will do some searching to see what I can find too, surly doesn't have to be made from scratch... will see if I can find a good pic to use. Really appreciate your help!

dehrlich,

Your call. I am going to proceed and do the pattern anyway so you have an option. After about two hours last night I have this to show for it. I'll work on it some more tonight and I think I should have it done by this weekend. Unfortunately I am completely useless at making patterns from 2d pictures and this is the only way I can make even half decent patterns.

Wow you are like crazy good at that. Wish I could do that kind of stuff. Thanks, can't wait to see what you come up with.

Okay. Three more hours and the tractor model is done. I think two days for the trailer and another two days for the tank so this weekend should be fairly easy deadline. I did a test pattern and I like it. Not photo-realistic but good enough for pattern building.

For bragging rights I think CW will be the only site on the entire web that will have a M1070 and M811 patterns available.

Jeff,

Thank you. Its been a fun build.

I started learning blender about a year and a half ago at the same time I got my CW. I didn't actually figure out I could use the two together till much later. Not the sharped tool in the chest.

But I amazed at what blender is capable of for it being a free program. The learning curve is a cliff but once you have some of the basics down it comes down to artistic vision again instead of mechanics.

Having said all that. I got into a rhythm last night and worked on the pattern for 8 hours straight. I ended up going to sleep at 3 am for a 6 am wake up alarm for work. I am running of fumes today but very pleased with the pattern. I did cheat a re-use the trailer from drew147. It would have taken me another day to recreate it.

dehrlich,

Let me know if you want it tweaked any.

dehrlich,

I should mention I typically don't put anywhere near this much effort for the patterns I typically share but its for a wounded vet. I hope the patterns come out and that they enjoy them.

That is amazing and I am very grateful for your effort. I will also make sure he knows that you helped me with this. It makes me feel great that there is so much support for veterans on this forum, and that there are so many of us here as well. Thanks again, I will post a pic of the finished product.

Here is my first attempt at designing this plaque. Are there any suggestions to get more definition out of the trucks? I can go deeper if needed. Thanks for any help.

I think you have maximized the patterns to their potential. Very nice by the way. To get more detail I would have to add it to the 3d model. Enclosed is a picture of the model for comparison. I think you hit a home run but I am curious if some of the grey beards (figuratively) can impart some of their wisdom.

I am sure its going to look great. I still would like to see a pic of the finished project. Also after seeing you plaque I had to get centerline add-on. That really tied it together. Again, nice job on the design.

Here are pics of the final result. I added vector carves on the tires to create the illusion of wheels for more detail. It was carved on a nice piece of poplar I had, 12" wide and perfectly flat with some nice color. After clean up, I put a coat of poly on, but it didn't look good as the vehicles didn't "pop" out like I wanted. I went back and put a coat of golden pecan stain, a light color, which added just enough in some of the details to create shadows and make it pop a little better. Couple more coats of clear and it was done. I considered painting the lettering but I kind of liked the random burn marks left by the bit. I mailed it out yesterday, haven't heard from the customer yet but i'm sure he will love it. Thank you again for all the help with this, you guys are amazing!
