Edit Envelope

I may be having a senior moment here but I cannot get "edit envelope" to work on Designer 2.007. I draw a rectangle make sure it is selected then click on the edit envelope button and nothing happens. If the rectangle is selected and I scroll down under carving, edit envelope is grayed out. I am sure I am missing something simple but I cannot figure it out.

I'm pretty sure that the "Edit Envelope" tool is for objects like patterns or text. You really wouldn't need it for vectors. They can be edited directly.
