I have just submitted the Pierced Heart pattern to LHR for posting to the Pattern Depot and it should be available for download soon. Included with the pattern is a link to a video with complete instructions on how to use the pattern and make a complete project. The video is intended for beginning carvers but, the project would be great for any skill level. If anyone would like a sneak preview, here is the link to the video.

An excellent video. I had forgotten a couple of the techniques you used in making the hearts. So it was a great reminder of just what a wonderful machine/software we have to play with. Hope you do more videos in the future.

Great job on the video, Steve. I hope you make more of your informative videos too! You make it fun and interesting to learn.

Thanks to all for the great reviews. It was fun to make (sort of). I have to admit, it took me several tries to get the content and style to an acceptable conclusion. Then there's the tongue-tied factor. I finally learned that if I did it in segments it was easier than re-recording the whole video to correct a mistake. The pattern should be available in the PD soon. Connie is a very busy lady so we have to give her a little time.

I agree with Sharon, Steve. You did a super job on the video. Great project and a very instructional video. I am always looking for ways to reinforce what my CWs can do and this project sure fits that bill. Besides, my son is getting hitched in mid-July and I can see them really liking this project. Can't wait for it to hit the Depot... Thank you for all your hard work...

The Pierced Heart pattern is now in the PD. Just do a search for "Pierced Heart". I don't think there is a reference to the video in the pattern so here it is again

Will do, Steve. So far the education on Designer features has been worth the cost of the pattern, so I am already ahead of the game :)

I didn't think that patterns in the pd were editable by adding or changing things. I'll buy it and try it anyway, I like it. Love the video, very easy for an old guy like me to follow. Also learned some new things. Thanks Steve

I've got a couple of requests on the procedure and board thicknesses I used to make the two-toned Pierced Heart so I'll post it here in the forum so it may help anyone that wants to try it.
For the two-toned pierced heart I edge glued up two pieces of Walnut to get a board slightly larger than 12" square. Then did the same out of Maple. After the glue dried I planed and sanded the Walnut to a thickness of EXACTLY 7/16" (.4375). Then I planed and sanded the Maple to a thickness of about 1/2". I glued the two together and after the glue dried, I planed and sanded the Maple side only so the glued up board was 3/4" thick. I used a board size in the Designer of 12" by 12" instead of 18" by 12" and then uploaded each side to the card as separate projects. Then I used Bergerud's Universal Carrier Base for the sled and ran each side separately.
I highly recommend that you cut a prototype out of MDF or scrap wood to test the thicknesses before using any expensive wood. You don't have to let the project run to completion. Just long enough to get measurements. The measurements may vary from machine to machine depending on the tracking and accuracy of your machine. Even then, it still took me 2 attempts to get it right.

I have completed the first of 2 hearts I have carved. This one is for my son and future daughter-in-law who are tying the knot this weekend. Even though I have written my share of checks :) for this wonderful event, I couldn't help but want to carve this for them when I saw Steve's earlier post. It carved very well (although a long carve) and wasn't too difficult to final sand. My bride did her magic on the finishing and we hope they like it. It will be a fun weekend, I am sure. The second heart is about done as well and will be a gift to some friends getting married later this month. Very unique and personalized presents for those special couples. Thanks, Steve for the design and instructions. Well done!!!

John,
You did a really nice job on the carving, text placement, and the finish. I'm sure your son and future daughter-in-law will like it too and always think of you when they see it hanging on the wall.

Awesome video and project, Steve! I carved a prototype in mdf and other than the rough edges, it looks great. I'm planning to carve one in cherry or walnut, but worry about sanding. Any suggestions? I'm afraid hand sanding all those inside edges will too laborious. I'm not sure which quality of carving I chose on prototype, but perhaps a higher quality would yield better results. If not, would it be possible to use the outline tool and follow the initial carve with a 1/16" bit to refine it? I realize there is a taper on the edges from the carving bit. Would a simple outline yield perpendicular edges?

Thank you for buying my pattern and I'm glad to see you did a test carve on MDF first. Although recommended, most will get a little anxious and skip it. If you use "Optimal" when you upload the project file sanding is kept to a minimum. It takes a little longer to carve but the quality is worth the wait. Also, be sure to set the bit optimization to best whenever possible. Even then, there will always be a little bit of hand sanding and a Dremel, Roto Zip or similar tool really is handy.
The cutout tool uses the 1/8" cutting bit and will not get into all of the small corners. Especially in the center of the heart.

I carved mine in the "best" setting and it was still a 5 hour carve. I believe setting it to "optimal" makes it a 8 or 10 hour carve. I spent about an hour afterward with a palm sander, spindle sander, a number of different sanding wheels and a dremil.... Really wasn't a problem. Hate to wear out my CW on that long of a carve when I have a perfectly good sanding arm 😊

Enjoyed making a couple of carves using this pattern. However, sanding the inside curves and limited access to some areas made for some difficulty. I realize every portion doesn't have to be super smooth, but I prefer that every surface be silky. Just my idiotsyncrazy!:D
Thanks, Steve, for your contribution!

Nicely done, t-town. It looks great. I agree there is a fair amount of sanding but the results are worth it... Especially when you see the newlywed reaction...

I made 2. Machine placed keyholes in wrong place on first. The pictured one is walnut, but I also did one in cherry. Thinking I might offer some for sale, hence I now have a sample😃

My second one was given to some friends last evening who were married yesterday. A lot of the folks at the reception saw a picture of the one I made for my son and asked if I did one for these newlyweds. I just smiled and said they would have to wait. I think t-town has a great idea about these being very salable... Folks are always looking for unique wedding gift ideas... And this sure fits the bill....

Completed another pierced heart for a local customer who wanted something special for her daughter's wedding last Saturday. I think it went over quite well. I am enjoying these carves and they seem to be going over quite well.
