Today, I stopped into LOWE'S to pick up a Puck Light. For just under $10 I did find one, but it was a 20-watt Xenon type. Now, I remember reading where the recommendation was for a 9-watt Puck Light, for Lithophanes - which brings me to my question:

Has anyone used this particular wattage (20) Puck Light for their lithos? If so, what are your opinions?

I know that I could very easily just free the unit from its packaging, and try it out, but I hate to do that kind of thing. It's one matter to return something to a store, that was defective - but (IMO) quite another matter to return a perfectly functioning device because of not having, first, armed oneself with proper knowledge behind the purchasing situation. I know, for myself, that 'I' won't buy anything from a store with its packaging seen to have been opened, and taped back up.

But that's just ME :).

I've made one with a 2' rope light for a flat lithopane and turned out nice, And did a rotary cpvc light out of a 35 watt LED light bulb with a on and off switch and I really like the rotary carve it was $15.00 for the light bulb.. but last for 22.8 yrs.

Thanks for responding, and for the links - as well as for the examples shown.

I was mainly concerned about whether 20watts might be a bit too high, for lithophane backlighting.

@Aokweld101,

I DID see that LOWE's also carried packages of 3 LED, battery powered Puck Lights, similar to what is shown in the HF link. I had almost picked them up, instead, but thought that it's output might be a little weak, if only ONE was used. However, I think that I may take the one I bought back, and give the LED's a shot.

Thanks.

Just returned the light for their 3-pk battery operated Puck Lights. Getting ready, now, to build my stand for the litho. Will have pics, later.

Most puck lights are use in rotary lithophanes, do i don't know how it will work with a flat litho such as yours. ARe you going to enclose your litho in a box or are you planning on placing it like a night light?

If you want an easy lithophane box, check this out. It was made using sketchup in about 15 minutes. It took less than an hour to cut on the table saw only because we wanted box dovetail along the back of the box. You could easily use a miter joint if you wish. I will follow up with pictures of the actual box probably on Wednesday when it is totally finished. I used a 1/4 piece of corian that measured 7"wide x 9" high which slid right down into the 1/4" dado slot along the front sides and bottom piece. Pictures coming soon.. I'm in the middle of gluing on the bottom to hide the lamp cord.http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=73950&d=1421618840&thumb=1 (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=73950&d=1421618840)The top simply sits down inside the box and was cut on the table saw in 8 passes. Four times around the top laying flat on the table saw bed, then Four passes vertical to cut away waste leaving a perfectly tight fit. I also drilled a 1" hole centered in the inside diameter of the box to accept the switch cord as well as on the top to ease opening and allow any heat from my LED light to escape.

Here are the pictures of the finished project.http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74020&d=1421962502&thumb=1 (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74020&d=1421962502)http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74021&d=1421962502&thumb=1 (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74021&d=1421962502)http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74019&d=1421962502&thumb=1 (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=74019&d=1421962502) Just received another thank you letter in the mail from the customer. She stated that she had no idea what I had in mind when I said I would make her a light box for her lithophane. Her only response was "WOW"!.. She said that this was a wonderful conversation piece that all could enjoy. She further stated that on this dark, damp and dreary day (DDD) that her lithophane box was lit and how wonderful to sit and enjoy! Another satisfied customer. Thanks CW and LHR.

.

Firstly, very beautiful box, and very helpful information provided to me. It will indeed come in handy when I decide to make a light boxes for my lithos. I REALLY like what you have shown.

In answer to your question, though - this first litho of mine will not find residence in a light box. I am making a simple stand for it, based on one that a member did (don't remember who), and will have it backlit. This litho looked kind of nice when I had it placed in front of a window, but it doesn't pull at the same visual interest when it is viewed while being back lit with artificial light. I have some more 'work' to do before I think I should even consider offering such services for sale.
