I have been carving for a while and am looking for advice on sanding. When I carve fine detail like feathers on a wing, what is the best way to sand the rough spots and not trash the detail? Also, sanding the feathered area is a source of frustration. Any machine, tool...

What I do for those really fine details is re-carve with a small diamond burr. See:

The problem is that you need a way to hold the small shank. You need something like the ER11 adapter.

I bought these last month. Pretty handy and they fit in my Dremel

I use a 6" double mop on everything. 220 grit for most stuff, but 180 for hard wood. For your feathers it would work great. RJR Studios sold thru Sears online.

I have tried many types of mops and none of them get down into the narrow parts of the carve. Also, if I have a series of narrow valleys between narrow high parts, it sands everything down.
