I know that I, for one, would LOVE to have a tutorial library that we new guys could go to. Maybe a whole forum dedicated to just tutorials.

For example, I'd really, REALLY love to know how to (step by step) build a file in CorelDraw that - when imported into the CW software - could then have a cut path applied to it. I just can't do it. I've tried, I get either a big square, or frustrated. Or both.

Any help would be appreciated.

Meat,
Jon offers a few tutorials on using corel that are really good. I've been playing with mind now for a few weeks, I'm a little slow at this and I have a different version of Corel. But its exactly what you are describing. A few are few and a few are $10 which is almost free. Go to his web site and take a look around. http://www.allcw.com/

As to your cut-out path question, Your image should be on a white background, so that it is easy to discern a cut-path. Then, if you are just getting a square, you are probably missing the step where you Invert your carving, to raise the background even with the top of the board, so the inside pattern can be outlined (you can always invert it again). Yeah, I'm aware of those tutorials. For some reason, though, I can't view them on my Mac. I'm waiting for the quicktime versions...

I had a chance to go through the steps with the wheel pattern attached to this post.

Step one - worked fine, imported like it always does. Dragged pattern to wood.

Step two - inverted the gear, and this worked as well.

Step three - outlined the pattern, which drew a box around the image.

Step four - Used cutout tool, flipped cutout, and I have a box cutout around the image.

So at this point, I've got to ask again: what am I doing wrong? The image is a b/w bitmap (from CorelDraw), with the image black, the background white.

I've attached the mpc file of the output as well.

Really ... this would be soooooo easy if there were a tutorial section here...

Meat, The link to the MPC doesn't work...you may want to zip it first...

I just attached it to the post. Not sure why it couldn't be seen.

Ahhh, OK. When you import the image you will see a screen that has three buttons. Raise, Lower, Invert.

Press the lower button until the background turns black. Then click finish...

Drag the imported image onto your board and then outline it...

Ah HA! That seems to have made all the difference. It is interesting how it decides which lines go "inside" on this particular piece. I'm going to cut it out and see what it looks like ... should be about 30 minutes or so.

Thank you for your help!
