Thank you to those of you who weighed in when I asked for help with the finishing on this box. Came out pretty good I think. All curly maple with a pecan stain and finished with shellac. Big, body is 12x12x4. Those of you who didn't see the other post, this is for a returning vet from Afghanistan ordered by his parents. He is a medic. The caduceus was painted army green, then gold leafed.

Excellent craftsmanship. I love the finger jointed corners.
Did you use the CW to make them?

Thanks. No I have a couple shop made sleds that I use to make box joints on the router table. I used my large sled with a 3/8" up cut spiral bit for this. I used regular straight bits for a long time to cut them, but once I tried the spiral bits there was no comparison. Have never tried making them with CW.

Thank you everyone for your comments, I appreciate it. As I have said before, being a vet myself I always try to "bring my A game" when making stuff for another vet. Still new to this painting stuff and I sure appreciate the help of everyone on the forum.

One thing I just noticed looking at the pics, the specialist rank is deformed. The sides don't match, there is a flat on one side. I found it here on the forum somewhere.... oh well if I just noticed it after working on it for a few days most people probably won't either lol. Anyone got a better pattern?

Dehrlich,

I may be a crusty old First Sgt, and former medic, but that looked great!

Here's my question, I have never painted any carve of mine. However, I am interested to know how you painted the logos and lettering without it creeping down the sides? My question make sense?

Also, I can help you with rank logos if you need an assist in the future....

Hi Mike... for most of the stuff I paint that is raised above the carve region, I use what's called a sponcer I think... not sure how you spell it... but it's a flat sponge type thing on a stick that's used for doing stencils. You can find it about anywhere they sell craft paints. Comes in all kinds of sizes... but it works great for painting just the surface of something without the surrounding area. As you can see, on the rank carving I did take it down the sides with careful painting and the assist of some masking tape.
